Safe Use of Fire Extinguishers

If a fire extinguisher is used on a fire, it must not be returned to the location as it well may be empty and not work again. A spare extinguisher must be installed on a temporary basis.  Contact us for this service.

  • Locate the nearest fire extinguishers to your working position and note type of fire extinguisher and the class of fire that the extinguisher can be used on
  • Study the operation labels on the extinguishers so that you are familiar with the operation of the extinguisher. (There is no time to read instructions prior to using an extinguisher on a fire)

Rules for extinguisher use

  • Always hold the extinguisher upright

  •  Use the PASS rule

    • Pull the pin
    • Aim the nozzle or hose at the base of the fire
    • Squeeze the trigger or handles
    • Sweep the fire away from you

Note,  Keep the wind behind you when fighting a fire as this will keep the flames away.

  • Remember also to sound the fire alarm even if the fire is small. Lives and property can be saved by prompt action.
  •  If possible, have a partner to act as your eyes and ears behind you and inform a third person if you are fighting a fire when the alarm sounds so that you can be accounted for when the roll call is being taken.
